After You Sign In To Gmail
Use these steps to finish setting up Gmail and make sure your old Rackspace mailbox is no longer being checked by your devices.
Use Gmail This Way
For laptops and desktops, use Gmail in a browser at mail.google.com. For phones and tablets, use the Gmail app. This gives the best Gmail experience and avoids old Rackspace settings.
Check Every Device
Old Rackspace accounts can stay on devices and keep asking for passwords or showing outdated mail. Check every place you read email, including extra phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and any shared or backup devices.
Once Gmail is working on that device, remove or turn off the old Rackspace account for your MVP email address.
Where To Look
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts. Look for the old MVP/Rackspace account and remove it or turn Mail off after Gmail is working.
- Android: Settings > Passwords & accounts. Some Android phones may call this Accounts, Users & accounts, or Accounts and backup. Look for the old MVP/Rackspace account and remove it or turn sync off after Gmail is working.
Move Contacts
If you exported contacts from Rackspace Webmail, import that file into Google Contacts. After importing, add new contacts in Google Contacts instead of Rackspace.
Calendar
Email migration does not automatically move Rackspace calendar appointments. If you used the Rackspace calendar, start using a different calendar going forward, such as Google Calendar, your phone calendar, or another calendar you already trust.
Optional: iPhone And iPad Contacts And Calendar
The Gmail app handles email. It does not automatically add Google contacts or calendars to the built-in iPhone Contacts or Calendar apps.
For calendar, we recommend the Google Calendar app on iPhone and iPad. It gives the cleanest Google calendar experience.
If you prefer the built-in Apple Contacts or Apple Calendar apps, add your MVP Google account in iPhone or iPad Settings and turn on Contacts or Calendar sync.
This is optional. The advantage is convenience: names can appear in the iPhone Contacts app, and Google calendar items can appear in the Apple Calendar app.
Settings
Some personal settings may need to be checked in Gmail after you sign in.
- Set a vacation reply if you use one.
- Create filters for mail you want Gmail to organize automatically.
- Check your display name and profile photo if you want them updated.
Password And Account Protection
If Google asks you to create a new password, choose one you have not used for Rackspace. Extra account protection is encouraged, but wait until Gmail is working and your final confirmation has arrived before making extra security changes.
