Email Migration FAQ
Answers to common questions about the move to Gmail. You can open this page anytime, even without your personal migration link.
Before Your Move
What can I do now to prepare?
- Make sure you know your current Rackspace email password.
- Use Rackspace Webmail to export contacts you want to keep.
- If you use the Rackspace calendar, start keeping new appointments somewhere else, such as Google Calendar, your phone calendar, or another calendar you already trust.
- Know which devices you use for email, such as your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, or webmail.
Should I reset my Rackspace password before the move?
You only need to reset it if you do not know it or are uncomfortable entering your current password into the migration page. If you reset it, use the new password on the migration page.
Should I export my contacts before the move?
Yes, if you use contacts in Rackspace Webmail. Export them before your move so you have a copy ready for Gmail.
After you export, avoid adding or editing contacts in Rackspace Webmail. Changes made after the export may not be included in the file you import into Google Contacts.
What should I do if I use the Rackspace calendar?
Rackspace Webmail does not have a simple calendar move path. If you use the Rackspace calendar, start creating new appointments somewhere else before your email moves.
Good options are Google Calendar, the calendar on your phone, or another calendar you already use regularly.
Should I change my devices before Gmail is ready?
No. Keep your current email setup in place until Gmail is ready. After Gmail is working, use Gmail in a browser on computers and the Gmail app on phones and tablets.
Getting Started
When will my account be moved?
You will receive an email when it is your turn. First, you will be asked to confirm your current email password so your old mail can be copied. Later, you will receive a separate email when Gmail is ready for you.
Do not switch to Gmail until the migration app or ready email tells you to start using it.
Will my email keep working while this is happening?
Yes. Your email will keep working normally while old messages are copied in the background. Keep using your current mailbox until you are told Gmail is ready.
Why do I need to enter my current email password?
The migration app needs your current email password so it can copy your old messages into Gmail. The page checks that the password works before saving it safely for the move.
If you are uncomfortable entering your current password, reset it first and then use the new password on the migration page.
Starting Gmail
What happens when I click Start Using Gmail?
New email sent to your MVP address will start arriving in Gmail instead of the old mailbox. The app will then start a final copy to bring over messages that arrived after the first copy.
You can start using Gmail right away while the last updates finish in the background.
What email address do I use to sign in to Gmail?
Use your regular MVP email address. You should not need to use a new or unfamiliar email ending.
What if Google opens my personal Gmail account?
Choose another account or add another account, then sign in with your MVP email address. The migration app tries to send you to a Google sign-in page with your MVP email already selected.
Can I keep using Rackspace after I start Gmail?
Once you start using Gmail, check Gmail for new email. Rackspace may still open for a while, but Gmail becomes the place to read and send mail.
What Moves
Will my old email messages move to Gmail?
Yes. Old email messages are copied into Gmail. Large mailboxes may take longer, and older messages may appear gradually while the move finishes.
Will folders look the same in Gmail?
Most folders move over, but Gmail may display them as labels. That can look different from Rackspace.
Will contacts, calendars, and signatures move automatically?
Contacts, calendars, and mail app setup are separate. MVP will try to carry over your email signature automatically when your exported signature can be matched to your email address. See the Contacts And Calendar guide for contact and calendar next steps.
Will my devices update automatically?
Usually no. Use Gmail in a browser on laptops and desktops. On phones and tablets, use the Gmail app and sign in with your regular MVP email address.
Technical Details
How does the move work behind the scenes?
The system first copies your existing Rackspace mail into a prepared Gmail mailbox. When you click Start Using Gmail, new mail starts arriving in Gmail and a final copy runs to catch anything new that arrived during the first copy.
Does the move delete mail from Rackspace?
No. The migration copies messages. It does not delete your old Rackspace mail as part of the normal move.
What happens to very large messages?
Some email systems limit very large messages. If a message cannot be copied normally, the migration system records it for review so it can be handled separately.
How will I know the move is finished?
You will receive a final confirmation email when the last copy is complete. After that, Gmail is the place to check email.
